North Greece Fire District Operations:


The District:

The North Greece Fire District is a recognized fire district in the State of New York, County of Monroe, Town of Greece. The fire chief, who is responsible to the Board of Fire Commissioners, administers daily operations. The five commissioners are publicly elected residents of the fire district dedicated to providing the very best fire protection available. They manage an annual budget comprised of tax dollars levied on property owners in the district. This money is used for the purpose of purchasing apparatus and their upkeep, buildings and their maintenance, salaries, equipment, etc. The board also employs the services of an attorney, secretary and treasurer.

The Board of FIre Commissioners:
The Board of Fire Commissioners is sworn-in to promulgate the district policy, manage and distribute the budget and oversee the operations of the fire chief. A major function is to see that the district mission is carried out from an administration position. The fire chief is depended upon to provide appropriate emergency operations and logistical support. As fire ground incident commander, he/she is responsible for fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services (EMS), and a degree of hazardous materials response. A staff of twenty-six career firefighters, five full time dispatchers and thirty part-time personnel working under Monroe County Civil Service rules and New York State laws to carry out these operations and to support our volunteer firefighters.

The Officers:
Three of the four chiefs are volunteer. The volunteer chiefs are elected by the membership of the fire department and appointed by the District. By department rules, the volunteer chief may only serve for three consecutive years. There are three volunteer captains and three volunteer lieutenants who are assigned to fire station assignments. District fire officers include: an assistant chief, who has general supervisory responsibility over the entire career staff; two career captains who each supervise multiple shift groups of firefighters and are responsible for apparatus, apparatus maintenance, fire prevention and our communications center, and six career lieutenants who supervise individual shift groups of firefighters, oversee training, the oversee the quality of our EMS program and more.
